Hello & Welcome

Our Story-

Foster First Felines began with seven sick kittens and their mom, found hiding in the back of our floral warehouse. Overwhelmed, we took them to the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter — but we couldn’t stop thinking about them. A few days later, we offered to foster them… only to discover that every single one had already been adopted before we could complete the foster training!

That experience sparked the creation of our cat lounge and foster facility within Point West Flower Market — a space where cats receive safe, nurturing care and where people can relax, play, and find their purrfect companions. In just 23 months, we’ve helped 113 kitties find forever homes.  We are driven by elevated standards of care and robust support for adoptive families before, during, and after adoption. And we are just getting started.

At Foster First Felines, we believe every cat deserves dignity, compassion, and a path to a forever home. Every act of kindness expands their world, and every time they thrive, they expand ours. Through love, community, and a little lounge time, we’re changing lives — both feline and human — one furry world at a time. Together, we can give more cats safety, healing, and a real chance at forever.  We are guardians.

For the love of flowers and felines:

This Rohnert Park flower shop fosters kittens

Walk into the Point West Flower Market in Rohnert Park and you’ll spot one kitten playing with the drapes in the storefront’s window; one cozied up against a blanket on a sofa; and one on a table next to several potted orchids. These are some of the nine kittens the Rohnert Park flower wholesaler currently has available for adoption. As staff for Point West and Bella Vita Floral Production prepared flowers for arrangements, co-owner Christina Zegrean talked about bringing her love for flowers and animals together under one roof.

Zegrean has always wanted to be a florist, she said. When she started Bella Vita Floral Productions, she drove to the San Francisco Flower Market in the middle of the night to get flowers for her bouquets. After years of commuting back and forth, she said she saw a need for a local flower wholesaler in Sonoma County. So in 2017, Zegrean started Point West with her parents, Mary and John Hancock, and Tina Chiotti Stewart.

“I like helping people. So having the flower market, I feel it’s helpful for other people who are going through the same thing that I was in terms of having to be up all night and then processing flowers all day, the next day,” Zegrean said. Her shop specializes in sourcing flowers from Sonoma County when they are available, with Zegrean saying she doesn’t think flowers have to be luxury items, but instead can be incorporated into everyday life. “I think that flowers offer a moment of stillness because even if you’re rushing or really busy most of the time, people will stop to look at them and they can evoke pleasant feelings,” she said.

Point West is the first business in Rohnert Park to foster kittens for adoption in partnership with Rohnert Park Animal Services.

They began fostering kittens at the shop on accident, Zegrean said, when in July 2023, a mother cat and seven kittens were found behind the store. As a “die-hard animal lover” she felt compelled to help, taking them to the local animal shelter. Rohnert Park Animal Services supervisor Mickey Zeldes said Zegrean would call to check on the cats, and later offered to foster the kittens at the flower shop. “We’ve never had a partnership like this and I thought it’s certainly worth exploring. It sounds very creative and a good opportunity for our cats to be seen in a new environment,” Zeldes said. After Zegrean filled out an application and her shop was inspected, she officially became a foster. Since February 2024, Zegrean said there have been 58 cats adopted from the flower shop — most of which were adopted in pairs to better socialize the cats.

Falling for flowers at Point West ~ Autumn colors abound in Rohnert Park

It’s fall again, harvest time, the season of comfort. Nostalgic imagery comes to mind — pumpkins, apple pie, cozy sweaters, steaming mugs of cocoa and colors, those moody yellows, burnt oranges and crisp reds the color of a Fuji apple. I always look for autumn bouquets so I can bring those delightful hues into my home. But this year, I want something new, something different, not the same seasonal bunch I grab at the supermarket.

A market with local roots

On the advice of a friend, I head over to Point West Flower Mart on Professional Drive. Once a wholesaler, Point West opened its doors to the public during COVID-19 and has operated that way ever since. Not only can florists enjoy what Point West has to offer, but so can the rest of us. And it’s much more affordable than you might expect. Whether you purchase flowers for yourself, as a gift or for an entire event, this place can help. And if you need assistance with design, they can provide that too.

Bursting with seasonal color

As I enter the mart, I’m greeted by Christina, one of the owners. I ask if she has any seasonal flowers and she beams, gesturing toward the large walk-in refrigerator in front of me. She’s warm, friendly and happy to help. Moments later, I’m standing in the chilled room, immersed in color. Before me are buckets and buckets of beautiful flowers, perfectly bunched and ready for purchase: orange azaleas, yellow dahlias, snapdragons and roses, hydrangeas dusted pink. It’s stunning, for lack of a better word, and I’m overwhelmed by all the choices. I’m mentally drooling as I stoop over some roses to take in the smell. I want them all, I think, but saner heads prevail. I bring dahlias to the register along with some greenery I couldn’t possibly remember the name of. The flowers are local, Christina confirms for me as she wraps them in paper. They’re from a farm in Sebastopol. Point West buys mostly local whenever possible, wanting to support county farms and help give something back to the community.

A place for kittens, too

And give back they do, but not just in the way of flowers. Point West is not only a flower mart, but also a foster home for kittens from the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter. In an adjacent room, you can visit with kittens who are looking for a home. More than 100 cats have been adopted since the project started a year and a half ago. I thank the staff — they’re as lovely as the flowers — and pat Jerry’s head, the mart’s adopted feline resident. Then I visit the kittens on my way out. There are treats and toys and plenty of snuggles. It’s hard to leave. So if you come for a visit, just know you’ve been warned. You might leave with more than flowers in your arms.
